Fun DIY Woodworking Tips
September 7, 2022

Woodworking may be one of the activities you have to carry out when setting up your space. You may decide to make a simple wooden shelf for your favorite books or a side table for your living room or favorite corner in your house. Whatever your choice, here are fun DIY tips that would come in handy when trying woodworking on your own.

1. Dust and sanitize already abandoned wood

If the wood you are using to create your homemade furniture or cabinet is an abandoned one, the best thing to do is to clean and clear it from all forms of dust and dirt. Wood obtained from outside your house must be cleaned with water from a running hose and when dry, use sandpaper to smoothen the surface, and apply sanitizers to every part of the wood before carving.

2. Use appropriate Wood Glue

Wood joining shouldn’t have ragged edges or connections, so check out and buy only quality wood glue before purchasing any wood glue for your home woodworking. After the purchase of glue, when it is time to join wood to make your desired furniture or cabinet, make sure the glue is applied only with a wood flux brush.

3. Finish woodcraft edges with coconut oil

Coconut oil is the perfect finish substance for your wood finish. Unlike conventional wood oil, coconut oil is more likely to help hide shortcomings and scratches on your finished woodwork. With coconut oil, your woodwork will have a shiny and warm sheen. If you are a beginner or a novice to woodworking, try using coconut oil to finish your wood edges.

4. Have a storage shelf

Woodworking might be a constant activity in your home, and this is why a carved area must be set up to make woodwork tools easily accessible. This storage shelf will serve the same purpose as wall organizers that are not homemade.

5. Smoothen curved wood

If the wood available for your woodwork is curved, to either cut or finish it, the ideal thing is to smoothen its edges with sandpaper. Sanding is the least difficult in woodworking, so it should be sanded once the curve is carved.

6. Try out rabbet joints as a beginner

Although rabbet joints may not be a chic form of wood joining, it is the best joint to use when doing woodwork on your own. This joint merges a wood piece edge with a separate board using wood glue.

7. Have a band saw

A ban saw is one of the vital woodworking tools you should have if you are interested in doing this activity yourself. Besides using this tool to cut wood, you can try it out when working on metal. You can resaw and rip woods into thinner and smoother surfaces using this tool.

8. Buff Wood

One of the qualities of well-finished woodwork depends significantly on the buff system. Before you engage in your woodworking carving, be sure to buff the wood likely to be used, and a buffing system is not only limited to wood; it can also be for metal.
